Occasionally, when I prepare dinner early and am seeking entertainment while doing so, I turn on the television to watch Dr. Oz — I am interested to know which health topics are top of mind among consumers. Perhaps it’s sheer chance, but it seems he is always talking about some food product, herb, supplement, procedure and/or activity a person can get or do to look younger.
Does Dr. Oz have a predominantly 40-something+ aged audience or are we – as a culture – overly obsessed with anti-aging regimes?
I guess if money were no object, I might tuck a few layers here or augment a little there. But I am firmly convinced that covering up one flaw is only going to highlight another. So why bother in the first place?
As a therapeutic alternative, why not focus on feeling good as opposed to an obsessing over our appearance? I feel quite certain that our inner vibe will radiate outwards anyway.
Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Buy new make-up. Rather than paying more than $3000 for bepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, why not splurge on some new makeup? You’ll look good, feel good and look at least a few weeks younger, too. While you are at it, you could spend a couple hundred more on some anti-aging eye and/or face cream. Maybe one day those marketing gimmicks will actually be true.
Expand your wardrobe. Buy some new clothes to compliment your figure and strut your stuff. This doesn’t necessarily mean tight mini-skirts or designer tops, but you don’t have to go ultra frumpy either. Why look older than need be at the expense of some loose-fitting and/or outdated styles? New exercise gear is a great incentive to work out, too.
Eat right. Anyone who reads my blog regularly will not be surprised that, once again, I have brought the topic of feeling good back to food. If you eat lots of whole foods and balanced meals, you’ll have an energy supply that lasts through the whole day, without needing loads of caffeine or gallons of 5-hour energy. And a constant and dependable energy supply will give you the boost you need to feel like a million bucks – without spending it.
Fight the fat. The sad reality is that muscle starts turning to fat at the age of 30, and if you don’t stop the age-old process, you’ll suffer the ramifications. This doesn’t mean you should cut out cardio from the routine; rather, it means you should add strength building exercises to it.
Get a new hair cut. I have been obsessed with growing my hair ever since I saw my old boss in Seattle earlier in the year. She had grown out her previously short hair-do and looked fabulous, younger than ever. Though I’m not sure the lengthy locks will do the same for me, a sassy hair style can definitely give a person a new skip to her step. Think about it – how many times does “good hair” get a day off to a great start?
Dress up. I watched a Dr. Phil episode years ago that has stuck with me until this day. When a woman was complaining that her husband was no longer attracted to her, he asked how often she fixed her hair and put on make-up and nice clothes. When her answer was, “Almost never,” he responded with, “So what do you expect?” Now I don’t exactly embody the ideal of looking good all the time, but if we never dress ourselves up to look good, then how are we supposed to feel good about how we look?
Stop complaining. How many of you spend a lot of your waking hours obsessing openly about your wrinkles, sagging skin, gray hair and/or aged skin? The more we talk about our flaws to others, the more we focus on them inwardly, too. However, the less we complain about our looks, the more satisfied we’ll be with what we’ve got. After all, it may be bad, but it could be worse!
See the beauty within. At the expense of getting a little sappy, there’s more to beauty that flawless skin and big boobs. And not to say that I don’t wish for both, but there are other qualities far more important, or at least that’s what I tell myself when I put on my 32 B bra. But seriously, the more we soak in the inner beauty of ourselves and others, the better we’ll feel about ourselves. And about life.
