In preparation for the new year, I recommend making a top ten list (or twenty if there’s more). That’s right…

Make a list of things that make you feel good.

Things that make you feel good, happy.

And I’ll start.

Not sure where it falls on my list, but music has always been an important part of my life. I can’t sing or dance very well, but that doesn’t keep me from trying. A cheerful song makes me smile, a memory of my childhood generally provokes laughter, an upbeat tune picks me up at end end of a long run. Music almost always takes me to a happy place (unless I’m playing Sarah McLachlin).

When my son is dancing and singing to music, it brings me even greater joy. (Lately, Black Eyed Peas The Dirty Bit and Katy Perry’s Firework are his favorites).

I’m not sure where Luke gets his love and talent for music. Maybe it’s because I played music non-stop when he was in my belly. Or because I danced him around the room when he was a little baby. Whatever the reason, music is definitely on his top ten list – near the top, no doubt.

As a kindergartner, he sang “You’re the one that I want” with his teacher in front of the entire school.

And just a week or so ago, he danced to Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean (or “Billie Jeans,” as he says) – again, in front of the school, as a participant in the bi-annual talent show. And even if music isn’t on your list, this video is certain to make you smile.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller was one of my favorites in the 80s and apparently the tradition lives on.

May music make you smile, today!
